Job description:
The research topic will be the use of stable oxygen isotopes in phosphate as novel tracers for biogeochemical P cycling in the soil and plant system. Phosphorus is an important nutrient, but it lacks multiple stable isotopes. The use of oxygen isotopes provides a promising tool to trace P sources and transformations in natural ecosystems. The PhD project will mainly perform laboratory-based experiments, involving microbial cultures and enzymatic assays, to characterize some of the microbiological processes influencing P cycling and the isotope signature of the most important P organic sources. The project will use the state-of-the-art facilities of the Plant Nutrition Group and Stable Isotope Laboratory at ETH Zurich.

Integrated modelling of land-use changes at rainforest margins in Indonesia
Starting date
As soon as possible.
Rationale
The project will investigate the ecological and socio-economic trade-offs at the rainforest margin under land-use change. Previous insights (e.g., Steffan-Dewenter et al. 2007 ) will be extended using dynamic modelling techniques. Based on a large and long-term data set, ecological and socio-economic model components will be developed from scratch that simulate the spatiotemporal dynamics of land use (rainforest, agriculture) and individual households. Combined model analyses will investigate trade-offs in biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and household income.

University Hospital Aachen - Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Project: Recognition of intestinal commensals by regulatory and effector T cells.
PhD position in life sciences (TV-L E13/50%) available in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology , University Hospital Aachen from October/November 2010. The position is funded by the DFG (German research foundation) for three years.
Tolerance to food antigens and commensal bacteria is of pivotal importance to maintain immunological homeostasis in the intestine. Disturbance of tolerance leads to food allergies and inflammatory bowel diseases. We seek to study antigen-specific T cell responses towards floral bacteria and plan to analyse whether the strain specific nature of different commensals is critical for effector T cell vs. regulatory T cell induction.
