The Department of Molecular Developmental Biology and Physiology in the Institute for Zoology at the University of Heidelberg is seeking a highly motivated
Junior Group Leader
to establish a junior research group focused on quantitative image analysis and mathematical modeling of imaging data.
The junior research group is expected to develop analysis tools, which will allow the quantitative analysis of imaging data produced in developmental biology research. We expect expertise in 3D cell tracking with different spatial and fluorescent labels, interest in establishing a pipeline or toolbox that facilitates data visualization and interpretation and the participation in the continuous development of microscopic systems such as the light sheet based fluorescence microscopes. There should be a strong interest to develop tools for model building to eventually generate hypotheses about the underlying mechanisms of the biological question.
Research collaborations within the Department as well as on and beyond Heidelberg Campus are strongly encouraged and we expect the group leader to participate in existing and future research networks and acquire independent funding. The junior group leader is required to participate in teaching on bachelor, master and PhD student level.
The successful candidate holds a PhD in Biophysics or a related field and has several years of relevant research experience combined with an excellent publication record. Teaching experience is of advantage. We are looking for an enthusiastic, open-minded and creative personality that is capable of working goal-oriented and has excellent communication skills.
The Department of Molecular and Developmental Biology is newly established and offers a dynamic, cutting edge research environment. A strong point is the interdisciplinarity by bringing together developmental biology and bioinformatics research. Access to high-end microscope equipment as well as computational infrastructure is provided. In addition the department maintains collaborations both on Heidelberg Campus, with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and beyond and is part of several research networks.
We offer a position in the salary class TV-L 13 for the junior group leader and a package of financial support for staff and consumables for up to 5 years.
Applications include a letter of motivation, a one page synopsis of the planned research, CV, a list of publications, contact details of 2-3 referees, and should be addressed to: Prof. Jochen Wittbrodt, Institute for Zoology, University of Heidelberg, INF 230, 69120 Heidelberg, Germany, email: jochen.wittbrodt@zoo.uni-heidelberg.de . Email applications are preferred and should be send no later than February 18th , 2010.
